Equinoctial Gales of the Firth of Lorne

1.
Winter tempest, howl the coming storm Blood moon over the Firth of Lorne Her great plaid in the boiling sea Blanket of snow on the morning three. Great windstorms splinter the stone The Queen atop her mountain throne Frosts gnaw into the bone As the Hag’s drifts are blown. Scattered dead leaves from the broken bough The frore eats into the sickened ground The crone screams into the winter sky Darkness falls and the year must die Her great plaid in the boiling sea Blanket of snow on the morning three. Great windstorms splinter the stone The Queen atop her mountain throne Frosts gnaw into the bone As the Hag’s drifts are blown. A threnody to the dying year Howling lament of the frozen winds That shatters rocks and breaks the spear As the Hag rages and screams. Cailleach wrought the mountain And forged this ancient lands Eternal sky over a raging maelstrom Blooms of purple under the coming storm.

Mesmerised in motion, caught in the cauldron’s reins Gateway to the underworld, the image will drive you insane. Mired by the ocean The Hag will drag you below Haunted by Death’s illusion And the vortices of souls. Eyes close as you fall to your knees The soothing lament of a million screams. The sickening sound as the keel rents and tears Hands grasp splintered timbers and spit your final prayers. Mired by the ocean The Hag will drag you below Haunted by Death’s illusion And the vortices of souls. Eyes close as you fall to your knees The soothing lament of a million screams. Dragged to the depths by the mighty tidal streams A calmness descends as the drowned sailor dreams Images of home and sunlit fields Now at peace below the roaring seas.

The flood Between the isles Dark water and the foaming tide Jagged reefs Lie just below Masked by the raging flow. Through the narrow Sound The captain’s guiding hand Through the swirling torrent Fearing foundering and drowned. Blistered hands Graps the helm Dragged into the heart of rage Teeth of the Dog Splinter the hull Feasting on the terrified souls Through the narrow Sound The captain’s guiding hand Through the swirling torrent Fearing foundering and drowned. The dark undertow Surges below Swirling currents And fangs of stone.

The broke the pot upon the rocks Blew winds blight the crops. Commune under a star-welt sky Stars fall bathed in fire Sacrifice. Danse Macabre with the god Of the sea An oath of blood forever be. Fall unto the waves Hopes for full fields To reap with rusted blades. The darkness of the winter Brings fears that last forever. Fields died, the failing Our hopes are now waning The darkness foreboding As we lose our feeling Now begins the bleeding A bloodied sickened reaping Our end is nearing Over the cold horizon.
5.
We stand here alone Columns of shattered stone All alone in the sea Frozen and isolated. They tried to break their god to us But now they’re gone and turned to rust Laugh in the face of the fears With the beauty of the darkness, here. We stand alone Columns of shattered stone Break the bones. We survive We survive. In the darkness of the sea We stand together, we three Islands of the darkened seas. With the storm of the night Devoid from love, warmth and the light The lumen axe left us be. We survive We survive. We don't need the likes of them We can survive without them We are are one, we are three Forever eternally. We're the Islands of the Darkened sea Forever we’ll be.

Hewn from stone Vital atereal flow Spans to the Isle High and narrow. Fairy foxglove roots go deep Crumbling mortar Sea flows below Ebbs and flows Endless water. The narrow way The blind summit Memories fade Greatest days. Fairy foxglove roots go deep Crumbling mortar Sea flows below Ebbs and flows Endless water. The road to Seil Arcs a short way The aged stone Lost to time. Fairy foxglove roots go deep Crumbling mortar Sea flows below Ebbs and flows Endless water. The road to Seil and beyond Arcs a short way over the sea Aged stone from a forgotten age Lost to time and memory.

Beaches of boulders Dark pools of spawn Scent of heather lingers In the shelter of her caves. I gaze in awe at the peak Surrounded by vast bogs of peat Weathered by wind, snow, rain and sleet Custodian of the gate to the deep. Water roars around her shores Boiling cauldrons and snarling dogs To stand upon her sheer cliffs And embrace the rolling fog. I gaze in awe at the peak Surrounded by vast bogs of peat Weathered by wind, snow, rain and sleet Custodian of the gate to the deep. We sit and watch the tide turn As we warm by our driftwood hearth Warmth to our blood as the wood burns Time to cast off and depart.

Old hands Tear at soil Scour slates Endless toil Strike hard Into stone Limbs jarred Splintered bone. Splintered the dark core A heart of shattered shale Greed demanded more They were doomed to fail. Rusted hulks Cracked bricks Empty streets Laridae’s cries Fallen walls Shattered tile Bare floors Abandoned isle. Clawing at her stone soul Tearing out her foundation Slates strewn with fools gold Geological evisceration. The roofless derelicts lie in the silence Shadows and memories howl alone A wind whines through the rusted machines To hide the ghost’s lonely cries.

about

The sixth studio release from Dinenthal focuses on the West Coast of Scotland, specifically the part of Western Argyll that few have seen and visited is a place of raw and powerful natural beauty. Rich with legends of great and powerful Celtic goddesses, Scandinavian conquests, kings, queens, princes and princesses. A land where the sea meets the sky, the sky meets the land, and time drifts as the great tides roar between islands of splintered rocks. It that kind of place that once it enters your soul, it stays with you throughout eternity.
